Philosophy

At Burnaby Childrens Centres Society, we value the opportunity to support children to experience the joy and wonder of childhood.   They need the freedom to explore and experience in a way that will create a love of life-long learning. Children need to believe in themselves, have a healthy self esteem and feel confident as they develop into a healthy well rounded child.

In order to achieve this, we have a philosophy  that is both, Reggio and Emergent Theme Inspired.

We believe that:

  • Children must have some control over the direction of their learning.

  • Children learn through experiences of touching, moving, listening, and observing

  • Children have a relationship with other children and the materials and environment around them

  • Children need many ways to express themselves.

Some experiences that we facilitate, set up, and explore with the children are planned yet flexible and focused around some key developmental areas:

  • Development of a positive self-concept

  • Respect for the individuality and rights of others

  • Positive ways of interacting with peers and adults

  • Acceptance and expression of both positive and negative feelings

  • Cognitive growth and development

  • Emergent literacy and numeracy

  • Fine motor and large muscle development

We at BCCS work to foster autonomy, independence, co-operation and self help skills through play and group interaction. We believe that play is a big part of the learning process. It is a time where children are developing their own interests and where friendships with peers are being formed.Children are learning concepts, developing physical skills, mastering life situations, and practicing language. They are being challenged and taking risks.
